Waitrose has become the first UK supermarket to stock new Fairtrade nut brand Liberation, in time for Fairtrade Fortnight.

The mixed packs of cashew nuts and peanuts, baked with a drizzle of light oil, are available in two flavours - ‘lightly salted’ and ‘with a hint of smoked’. There are two additional flavours in the range - ‘lemon and a hint of chilli’ and ‘natural (no added salt)’.

The growers who supply Liberation own 42 per cent of the company, meaning they have a say in how the business is run.

Following strong pre-Christmas sales in charity shop chain Oxfam and health food stores across the UK, the brand is now rolling out into UK supermarkets. Managing director Ceri Willmott said: “One of the aspects of Liberation which makes it unique in the nut industry is that those traditionally seen as the weakest in the supply chain are joint owners of the business. Every pack we sell makes a real difference.”

Liberation is also now available in more than 300 Sainsbury’s stores, and other supermarkets are expected to follow.
