Sainsbury’s has insisted no decision has been made to move out of its Holborn offices following recent media reports suggesting it was seriously considering a move.
The retailer controversially moved into its central London headquarters only three years ago, after then chief executive Sir Peter Davies decided to move from its old Stamford Street offices.
Newspaper reports have said the retailer, now under the helm of new chief executive Justin King, is ‘seriously’ considering plans to relocate from the former Mirror Group headquarters.
The Holborn building totals around 330,000 square feet, but some reports suggest large parts of the building are still empty. Property experts estimate the retailer could save between £2 and £5 million a year through moving to a new building.
A statement from Sainsbury’s said: “As part of the work for the October 19 statement to the city, we are examining every element of our cost base which will form part that statement, but there is no board decision to relocate from 33 Holborn.”
