The National Farmers’ Union Scotland (NFUS) has appointed Bob Carruth as the union’s communications director and Alison Gillespie has been promoted to the new role of membership director.

Carruth, who will take up post on June 2, is currently NFUS’ animal health and milk policy manager and he has also worked in the organisation’s regional team. Prior to joining NFUS, he worked as an agricultural journalist.

Gillespie has been with NFUS since 2004, working initially as regional manager for Highlands and Orkney & Shetland, but latterly as the organisation’s business development manager. She will take up her new post on June 16. The membership director is a new post and marks the beginning of a strengthening and expansion of NFUS’ regional team to provide greater support and strength to members and its local offices on the ground.

NFUS chief executive James Withers said: “I am delighted to welcome both Bob and Alison to their new roles. They come into them with invaluable experience of both the industry and the organisation and at a time when there are major challenges and opportunities ahead for agriculture. I am fortunate to be leading a very talented and committed staff body, and being able to fill these two senior positions from within the organisation is testament to that.”
