J & S Technical Services (JSTECH) has appointed Simon Stell as sales manager to further expand sales of its sulphur products into the agricultural, horticultural, amenity and industrial sectors, and to develop new markets for its sulphur-based chemical products.

Stell studied life sciences and agronomy at the University of Hertfordshire and the University of Reading, graduating into a career in crop protection and plant nutrition with companies Murphy Chemicals and Farm Protection. At Monsanto Agricultural Company Stell developed use of the company’s roundup herbicide (glyphosate) for weed control in a wide range of crops in the UK and overseas.

JSTECH is part of the Marlin group and is a specialist supplier of sulphur-based chemical products. These include sulphur bentonite formulations under the Brimstone90 banner, as fertilisers and soil amendment chemicals in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and amenity.

David Reynolds, managing director of JSTECH said: “Simon brings to JSTECH strong technical and commercial expertise in international agricultural and chemical markets, which is an ideal background to further develop the many applications and opportunities for our sulphur product range.”

Sulphur is recognised as an increasingly important plant nutrient for a wide range of crops including wheat, brassicas, oilseed rape, peas and pasture grasses, as a soil amendment product and as a mineral in livestock nutrition. Sulphur has revolutionised control of common scab of potato by acidifying soils and inhibiting activity of the alkaline-loving pathogen Streptomyces scabies. There is re-kindled interest in the spraying and dusting of sulphur to control plant diseases and phytophagous mites, especially in organic crop production systems.

“Future areas of development for our agriculture-grade sulphur are fertilizer blends incorporating sulphur with other important nutrients, and use of sulphur as an additive in a range of livestock feeds,” said Stell.
