New fresh director at Tesco

Colin Holmes has returned to Tesco as the retailer’s commercial director for fresh food after almost a year sabbatical. Touted as a potential successor to Sir Terry Leahy, Holmes has worked at Tesco for more than 20 years. He left his position as chief executive of the supermarket’s convenience business in April last year to spend more time with his family and carry out charity work.

Well equipped for the new position, Holmes had also been chief executive of T&S Stores, the convenience store chain that Tesco took over in 2003, and operations director for Tesco superstores central.

Holmes will take over from Steve Murrells, who has moved from fresh food to take on responsibility for the integration of garden centre chain Dobbies. Murrells joined Tesco in 1992 and spent 18 months improving the produce supply chain at the start of the century. He became ceo of T&S in 2003 and oversaw the transition to Tesco Express, before becoming director for fresh foods in 2005.
