The 10 new EU member states are likely to boost the EU’s flower and plant expenditure by 800 million euros, according to Susanne Lux of the German consultancy Mec Marketing & Ethics.

Dr Lux believes that the development of the EU flower and plant market is closely connected to economic and population trends.

In an analysis of the future of the market post the accession of 10 new member states and 75 million citizens. Dr Lux states that between 1990 and 2000 gross domestic product increased in many EU countries by 50 per cent or more. During the same time consumption per head for cut flowers increased in most EU countries by at least 20 per cent.

Over the next 10 to 15 years Dr Lux predicts that in the west and northern European markets expenditure of flowers and plants will remain steady.
