National Chip Week smashes world records

Five chip-related world records were broken in five days as part of this year’s National Chip Week, according to the British Potato Council (BPC).

The BPC-led event, which aimed to generate positive messages about chips, was hailed as a success.

BPC marketing executive Caroline Evans, said: “The response to this year’s National Chip Week has been amazing, as has the support from growers, processors and retailers who promoted the week by displaying special on-pack and lorry stickers. Their involvement also helped us to achieve the real highlight of National Chip Week - setting five different chip-related Guinness World Record in five days!”

Selim Sener at Café Piccante in Edinburgh achieved the most bags of chips wrapped in one minute by filling ten portions in the allotted time.

The record for the fastest time to produce a portion of chips was set by Henley’s in Wivenhoe, Essex, when staff took just three minutes and forty seconds to prepare, cook and serve a portion of chips from scratch.

A total of 1,000 portions of McCain original oven chips were eaten in under one hour in London to claim the record for the most portions of chips eaten simultaneously, while Wales bagged the record for the world’s largest bag of chips when the team at Dorothy’s Fish Bar in Cardiff served chips directly into a giant bag, which tipped the scales at a huge 392.5kg - beating the existing English record holders by 24kg.

A 1.4 metre giant roll was used by the Coral Island Chip Shop in Blackpool to set the record for the world’s largest chip butty, with potatoes supplied by Colin Bradley Potatoes Ltd.

Evans said: “We couldn’t have achieved these records without industry support and wish to extend our thanks to all involved. The week was all about celebrating the chip’s status as a national treasure, as well as demonstrating that chips can be enjoyed as part of a healthy balanced diet.

“With coverage appearing on national television and in numerous national and regional newspapers, this year’s campaign has been a resounding success.”
