Morrisons has trained more than 110,000 staff in energy awareness as part of drive to reduce its carbon footprint, it has been revealed.

The supermarket’s Switching On to Switching Off training programme has resulted in a five per cent reduction in energy use across the chain, equating to savings of just under £3.4 million, according to its annual corporate social responsibility report.

Morrisons aim to reduce its carbon footprint by 36 per cent and its energy use by eight per cent by 2010, and it has appointed ‘energy champions’ in all company locations to help raise awareness of the drive.

Simple yet effective measures implemented in stores have included reprogramming oven timers and other machines, and ensuring lighting throughout stores and car parks are only on when needed.

Morrisons is encouraging staff to help further cut carbon emissions using ‘carbon networking’ across the company, by sharing information and best practice ideas.
