Morrisons has said it expects current sales trends to at least continue after reporting like-for-like sales excluding fuel rose four per cent in the 15 weeks to May 20.
"We expect it at least to continue at that level," chief executive Marc Bolland told reporters at the firm's annual general meeting. Sales of organic, fairtrade and healthier foods have risen by 20 per cent, 40 per cent and 50 per cent, respectively, Bolland said, without specifying a time period.
Chairman Ken Morrison added: "We are getting back with the day job now and would expect retail sales to respond."
Sir Ken will step down as chairman in 2008 and he said today that his replacement - who would initially take the role of deputy chairman - would be announced "in the near future".
