Morrisons is planning to open hundreds of convenience stores over the next few years that will offer the same prices found in its supermarkets.

The UK’s fourth-biggest supermarket is enjoying success from two ‘M local’ shops that opened during the summer in Ilkley, West Yorkshire and Manchester.

Morrisons’ commercial director said these stores are at the heart of its grand expansion plans.

“We’re pursuing an aggressive space strategy and convenience stores is at the heart of this. We want to open several hundred in the next few years and continue growing our market share,” Richard Hodgson told The Sunday Express.

“What we won't do is replicate what's out there at the moment, which is other supermarket convenience stores charging a premium on products. We'll match our supermarket prices to our convenience stores because we want them to enhance our brand perception.”

Hodgson’s comments follow the announcement that Morrisons is aiming to create 7,000 further jobs next year by opening 25 new supermarket stores.

The retailer is also launching a new food and drink budget range in January.

The M Savers range will replace the Morrisons Value product line and will feature drawings of the products rather than the current green and yellow colour scheme.

Asda is also expected to revamp its Smart Price value range next month to 400 food and 200 general product lines adorned with a new logo and photography on the pack.
