Morrisons on lookout for new ceo

Wm Morrison is seeking outside help in its search for a new chief executive, having ruled out six potential candidates.

Chairman Sir Ken Morrison said earlier this year that current chief exec Bob Stott would continue in the role until 2007.

However, Morrison was urged by the board to retract this pledge in October as the supermarket group reported the first pre-tax losses in its 106-year history.

The board plans to announce the new ceo at its annual results in March.

But investors are reportedly divided on whether to appoint an internal or external candidate for the role.

One observer warned the board would likely experience difficulty in finding someone suitable: “Sir Ken is in charge there and he is not everyone’s cup of tea. The business does have problems, so there won’t be people queuing up to do it but it is a very big business with a super brand and those who know it have the confidence that the retailer will come right.”
