Morrisons faces financial penalty

A £6,300 fine has been slapped on supermarket Morrisons for selling out-of-date yoghurts, paté and watercress at its Halifax store.

The supermarket admitted six counts of selling produce past its use-by date at its Illingworth branch. Magistrates have imposed a £5,000 fine and £1,300 of charges in costs.

Environmental health officers paid a visit to the store in November after a complaint from a member of the public, magistrates in Calderdale heard. Food between one and 17 days pat its use-by date was found on the shelves.

Morrisons watercress was one of the offending items, along with several processed items.

Prosecutor Zulficar Ali said the company had been convicted of similar offences in Salford and Cumbria.

A Morrisons spokesman said: “We take our responsibilities very seriously and the quality and safety of all products we sell is paramount.

“We took prompt action and can assure customers this was a localised incident.”
