Moroccan strawberries are arriving in the UK two months ahead of schedule.
Adrian Wallbridge, technologist with Redbridge Worldfresh, said the company had developed some good early varieties and experimented with advanced growing techniques. “We don’t usually start importing them until January but we have managed to manipulate the crop to bring them earlier and earlier,” he explained.
Despite this progress, Wallbridge claimed further advances to the season would be compromised by Morocco’s extremely hot autumn weather.
Meanwhile, the company’s Israeli strawberry production is set to undergo a geographical shift.
Redbridge’s strawberry sites have historically been restricted to growing regions north of Tel Aviv.
However, owing to the increasingly high demand for land in this area, Redbridge is now exploring new sites to the south of the city, towards the Gaza strip and Arava desert regions.
