MJ Morris offers convenience advice

The convenience sector needs more advice on how to handle fruit and vegetables, Leicestershire-based fresh produce wholesaler MJ Morris & Son Ltd said at the Convenience Retailing Show, at the Birmingham NEC, on Tuesday.

The third-generation family business, which supplies convenience chains including Londis, Spar, Select & Save, Costcutter and Yorkshire chain Proudfoot, as well as schools, hospitals and prisons, has an annual turnover of £8 million.

Richard Morris, pictured on the MJ Morris stand, said: “Feedback from consumers is the most important part of running a successful business, but we are also there to offer advice.

“Chillers are definitely the way forward to keep products fresh. Over-stocking is a very bad idea, but retailers need to accept that they are always going to have some sort of waste at the end of the day.

Randolph Morris, purchasing director at MJ Morris, added: “Packing fresh produce on a daily basis and keeping the quality high is a big part of our success, as well as giving the customer of what they need - not too much, the right amount - and giving shops the advice they need on how to deal with fresh produce.”
