A seed-breeder is celebrating its success after creating a new onion hybrid resistant to downy mildew.
Netherland’s based Nickerson-Zwaan has created an F1 onion hybrid of the Rjinsburger type after years of research.
Downy mildew is an extremely serious disease in onions which can quickly kill the leaves and can significantly reduce both yield and quality.
The firm is intending to breed the new hybrid’s resistance into a wider range of onions over the next few years.
