Marie Melnyk, who left Morrisons last December after 31 years, did so with a compensation package of more than £3.6 million, the supermarket chain has revealed. The chain has also unveiled a brand new corporate identity.

The former managing director departed due to ill health. Morrisons’ annual report details that it paid Melnyk a salary of £663,000, benefits of £24,000 and a compensation package of £2.9 million.

Martyn Jones has taken on Melnyk’s duties.

Morrisons has also unveiled a new brand identity and strategy that emphasises its fresh food credentials, as “the food specialist for everyone”.

The black letters on the Morrisons logo are replaced by green letters, although the logo still features the yellow oval and Morrisons wording. Rebranding will start in July with revamped advertising, fresh-food packaging and in-store signage.

Morrisons stores will be rebranded in a phased roll-out throughout the rest of 2007. As part of the overhaul, fresh-food preparation will become more visible.
