Canadian grower/exporter Mastronardi Produce, which operates the Sunset brand, has announced that it has begun transferring all of its current boxes to bleach-free recycled material in the lead-up to Earth Day on Wednesday.

Executive vice-president Paul Mastronardi said: “We continue to make the commitment to our customers that we pack all of our produce in recycled packaging. We are now taking it a step further in shipping our produce in 100 per cent recycled boxes.

“This further demonstrates our need to implement energy-efficient practices in our business process. By eliminating bleach from our boxes, we can now produce a cost-effective and earth-friendly shipping case that is made from 100 per cent recycled material.”

Mastronardi has also unveiled The Green Grass Project (GGP). The GGP identifies key items in Mastronardi’s business process that contribute to an eco-friendly environment. Split into three distinct phases of growing, packaging, and distribution, the project includes using recycled growing mediums; integrated pest management using good bugs and bumble bees; recycling water and fertiliser; recycled pop bottle clamshells; and energy-efficient lighting.
