A nationwide search for Britain’s best potato recipes is nearing its climax.

The Master Spud competition is urging the nation to cook with potatoes, and the best recipe will feature in a television advertisement this summer.

The competition is being run by the Potato Council as part of the Many Faces of Potatoes campaign; an EU co-funded marketing programme to promote fresh potato consumption in the UK, France and Belgium.

Celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli is heading up the search, and the opportunity to star with him in a national TV advertisement has lead to recipes being uploaded daily to www.manyfacesofpotatoes.co.uk.

After entry closes on 20 March, finalists will have the chance to cook their dish in front of a live audience at one of five roadshows across the country before being put to a public vote.

A winner from each region will then have the opportunity to star alongside Jean-Christophe Novelli in the ad, to be aired in June.

Caroline Evans, head of marketing and corporate affairs for the Potato Council, said: “Through the Many Faces of Potatoes activity, which will run until 2013, we aim to promote the versatility of potatoes to younger consumers, who eat fewer potatoes than their parents. The EU co-financing has meant an increased investment in promotion, including the TV ad prize. This activity aims to help positively influence consumption habits in both the short and the long term.”

Novelli said: “There will be many people with their own potato-based recipes to rival any that come out of a professional kitchen and I for one would love to taste them. Potatoes are such a versatile ingredient - they’re always on my restaurant menus. Food trends come and go but potatoes are an important part of British life. They are the perfect base for any healthy and delicious meal and are extremely quick and easy to cook.”
