M&S to debut with UK apricots

Marks & Spencer will be stocking the first British apricots of the season available in stores nationwide from the third week of July.

Grown in Kent by fourth generation fruit grower Robert Hinge, the apricots are part of a stonefruit masterplan at the supermarket.

For several years M&S has worked closely with its UK growers to increase the range of British fruits it can offer customers.

British Apricots are priced at £1.99 for six and available in selected M&S stores

An M&S spokesperson said: “[We have] grown cherries, plums and small volumes of damsons but the real challenge arrived when M&S decided it wanted to grow a predominantly French-grown fruit - the apricot - in the UK.

“With an extensive four year research project and trials, Robert Hinge, who has been supplying M&S with delicious fruit for over 10 years, has identified the right variety of trees, the best soil and the perfect area to grow British apricots for the first time.”

Hinge said: “We hope M&S customers enjoy the delicious British apricots when they arrive in store.”

As part of its Plan A green project, M&S has promised to continue to work closely with its suppliers to grow as much produce in the UK as possible.
