Marks & Spencer has announced a four per cent rise in food sales for the 13 weeks ending 30 March.

There was also positive news for the upmarket retailer's like-for-like sales, which rose 0.6 per cent.

The retailer said a renewed investment in its online business helped its multichannel sales to increase by 23 per cent, while international sails were also up for the period by seven per cent.However, the situation wasn't as positive outside of food with sales of general merchandise, which includes clothing, down 3.8 per cent.

'We are delivering an excellent result in food, with performence well ahead of the rest of the market,' said M&S chief executive Marc Bolland.

The retailer's shares rose by three per cent to 396p in early trading on Thursday on the back of the announcement.
