A man arrested following a series of bomb threats that led to the closure of 14 Tesco stores across the UK has been remanded in custody.

Philip McHugh, from Clitheroe, Lancashire, was told by magistrates in Stevenage that he will remain in custody until August 8.

The 51-year-old faces two charges of blackmail and two of making bomb hoaxes.

No other person is being sought in connection with the inquiry, according to Herefordshire.

Stores were temporarily closed in Port Talbot, south Wales; Pontefract, West Yorkshire; Market Harborough and Ahby de la Zouch, Leicestershire; Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk; Hucknall, Nottinghamshire; Hereford and Ledbury in Herefordshire; Barnes in south-west London, and in East Renfrewshire and Fife.

The other closures took place in regions covered by the Lancashire and Humberside police forces.

McHugh was arrested on July 23.
