One of the UK’s leading wholesalers for independent businesses, Makro, has been named as the best cash and carry for caterers in Scotland at the 2009 Scottish Wholesale Achievers awards.

Makro beat off stiff competition to be crowned Scotland’s top cash and carry for caterers at the prestigious ceremony hosted by the Scottish Wholesale Association (SWA) in Edinburgh.

Makro was recognised for its extremely high level of commitment to its catering and its staff’s excellent knowledge, passion and enthusiasm shown to all the customers reportedly stood out.

Gordon Bettaney, hotel, restaurant and catering customer relations manager at Makro, said: “This win is a huge honour for Makro and demonstrates the hard work and commitment of all our staff.

“We have invested heavily in improving our range, moving away from the ‘all things to all men’ approach and instead, fulfilling the needs of our core customer base - hotel, restaurant and catering businesses.

“The team here has worked really hard to ensure that our professional customers are at the heart of our operation, and at the forefront of any decisions we make. The catering category had a higher number of entries this year than in previous years, so to be recognised as the best is a real accomplishment for us.”

The Glasgow Makro store underwent a substantial refurbishment in late 2007, and as a result, a greater proportion of the store is now dedicated to fresh produce.

This huge investment by the company also saw a number of specialist positions created, which means Makro now has a dedicated team providing one-to-one customer service in the key product and customer areas.
