Packaging automation suppliers, G.Mondini Ltd and Ulma Packaging Ltd, have merged to set up a new business in Staffordshire.

The new business G.Mondini-Ulma have joined forces to provide a single complete-line packaging offer to both the food and non-food sectors in the UK.

G.Mondini, a family-owned business, is acknowledged for its tray-sealing technology from Italy, while Spanish-owned Ulma is a workers' co-operative renowned for thermoforming packaging lines and flow wrappers.

James Dallas, the newly-appointed managing director of G Mondini-Ulma, said that, as the two companies already had a complimentary product mix and had worked together in the past to provide full line solutions, there was compelling business logic for the amalgamation.

"These are exciting times and I am thrilled at being asked to lead G.Mondini-Ulma - two names synonymous with packaging automation excellence,” said Dallas.

As part of the changes G.Mondini and Ulma will relocate their services to facilities at Stone, in Staffordshire, though the company says that the move will not lead to any job losses.

The UK merger is also to act as a blueprint for further harmonisation of the companies' operations in other countries, such as France, South Africa, Australia, Russia and Japan, over the next three years as the new company targets further growth in areas including fresh produce, bakery, red meat, poultry, fish and ready meals.

The new firm will have “the in-house skills to offer complete, reliable and cost-effective packaging automation solutions”, while also focusing on research and development.
