Skimmia japonica 'Magic Marlot'

Skimmia japonica ‘Magic Marlot’ has been named ‘best novelty’ at Plantarium 2007.

The plant, which adds to the Skimmia collection, was exhibited by Kaatsheuvel-based Kwekerij van Son & Koot. It is described as the first and only variegated Simmia that is easy to grow. The plants are fairly branched and the flower yield is high, with the plant undergoing attractive visual changes as the year progresses.

Three further gold awards were also presented at the show, to Konst Alstroemeria for Alstroemeria ‘Kopride’ (‘Inca Pride’); Baumschule Eberts Gbr and W J van Ooi for Cornus ‘KN30 8’ (‘Venus’); and W J van Ooi again for Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Slender Silhouette.’

13 further plants claimed silver awards, with 22 collecting bronze. Judges also remarked upon the high number of shrubs submitted for inspection this year.

Elsewhere at Plantarium the award for best stand went to De Fruithof. Its exhibit featured fruit served on a platter. In the individual segments the best stand winners were: Nolina Potplanten Kwekerij (outside space), Lodders Boomwekerijen (culture and nature), Hobaho from Lisse (global green), De Fruithof (Impulse), Kwekerij Hoogenraad (ready for take off) and CNB Florateam from Lisse (best supplier).

There was also the special award of a Gold Plantarium pin for public relations man Frank van Suchtelen, who was honoured for his services to the show.
