FFlamingo Flowers is in consultation to close its Lingarden Flowers operation at one of its Spalding sites. The company, part of the Flamingo Group proposes to consolidate its UK operations at Flamingo’s two sites: in Sandy, Beds and Fulney, Spalding resulting in the anticipated closure of the Weston site. Managing director Tim Blackburn said: “This announcement reflects the need to meet the challenges presented by increasing cost and margin pressures across the business combined with the uncertain economic outlook.

“Regrettably this could lead to the loss of a number of jobs but every effort is being made through a formal consultation process to offer alternative employment at Flamingo’s Sandy and Spalding based flower businesses.”

The outcome of the consultation process and the potential closure are expected at the end of January.

Martin Hudson, Flamingo ceo said: “We recognise that this is a very difficult period for all employees and their families and we will continue do everything possible to mitigate the number of job losses. I would also like to assure our valuable customers that we remain totally committed to maintaining the highest standards of service delivery with a clear focus on quality, innovation and customer insight during this challenging time.”

Hudson added that despite difficult trading conditions, the prospects and the long term outlook for the Flamingo group are positive. He said: “No associated impact is anticipated on the other divisions of the Flamingo group which include Flamingo UK, the major supplier of premium and prepared produce to the UK major retail multiples.”
