Tesco expects to produce a 30 per cent energy saving on its first ever LED-powered store in Loughborough.
The Loughborough-based Tesco Express will be used as a tester for LED lighting with the most efficient energy-saving techniques then considered for rollout across Tesco's 2700 UK stores.
The store's signage, lighting and food storage areas are all lit by LEDs, and continue the supermarket giant's drive to become carbon neutral by 2050.
"Through the use of LED light fittings we can dramatically reduce energy usage, particularly at Express stores due to their smaller size and lower ceiling height," concluded Emmily Sjolander, environmental programme manager at Tesco.
