As part of British Tomato Week, Stubbins invited pupils from the St Mellons Church in Wales Primary School to experience its very own Tomato Zone at Rhymney Valley.

Mike Corcoran of Re:fresh Packer of the Year Stubbins presented an educational slide-show to the children to help explain how tomatoes are grown and how the nursery gets help from nature. Children were also given a goody bag containing fresh Welsh tomatoes to take back to school for lunch.

Commercial director Peter Turone said: “Being the largest Welsh tomato grower we wanted to highlight to our younger consumers how good Welsh produce can be. The open week at our nurseries is not just for children but is open to adults who may be interested to see the care taken and the dedication of our nursery team in growing an exciting range of tomatoes.”

Susanna Leung, assistant category buyer at Somerfield, said: “We are delighted to be part of British Tomato Week and are encouraging as many people as possible to get involved. The event in Rhymney Valley was representative of our strong relationship with local growers and a great day for all involved.”
