KG Fruits used Fruit Focus as the launchpad for its new Driscolls everbearer Jubilee, which has started small scale production this year and was named in honour of Her majesty the Queen's Golden Jubilee year.

'Jubilee is still in its infancy, but we believe that its wonderful appearance and superior eating qualities make it the most exciting introduction since Elsanta,' said KG md Nicholas Marston.

The variety was tasted on the KG stand at last year's Fruit Focus, alongside another sister seedling.

The decision was taken by KG, Marks & Spencer and Driscolls that Jubilee had the edge in flavour and it is available exclusively in M&S stores.

Jubilee was first crossed in 1998 and then flown to the UK to be grown as one of a batch of 13,000 seedlings in spring 1999 in a trial plot at William Pierce's Orchard Place Farm. The selection process whittled the seedlings down to 39 in the first year and just two by last year.

Jubilee strawberries were presented to the Queen in June, when she visited the South of England Agricultural Show, in Sussex.
