The Jersey Royal Company landed a Waitrose award at the supermarket’s recent London award ceremony.

The upmarket retailer recognised the business’s efforts while faced with adversity during a dry growing season, by awarding it a coveted trophy in recognition of its service level throughout 2010.

The company is also nominated for an award at the 2010 Quality Food Awards later this month for its Pearl potatoes.

Waitrose senior buyer Peter Cooke said:“This was the first season Jersey Royal Company supplied Waitrose directly and there were a lot of new things to learn to ensure our daily deliveries were met.

"Jersey Royal Company did not falter despite experiencing the worst drought conditions for 30 years, severely reducing crop yield.

In addition they were required to supply Jersey Royals as the Hero product in a ‘Heston’ TV advertisement, which saw volumes increase six fold against the original plan.”

The award was presented by Waitrose commercial director Mark Williamson to The Jersey Royal Company’s commercial manager William Church.

Church added: "It is a real honor to be recognised by the Waitrose business. The 2010 season saw us begin our first year of direct dealing with the retailer.

"Although the adverse weather caused severe issues throughout the season we managed to maintain the on shelf offer, as well as our commitment to pack 100% of the product on the Island.”
