Israeli Sharonfruit heads to Europe

The first shipment of Sharonfruit from Israeli shipper Agrexco is leaving the country on October 8.

Yuval Naamani, Agrexco product manager, said exports of the seedless persimmon variety this season are expected to reach 7,000 tonnes - a 75 per cent rise over last year. He said: “The export season will continue until April 2009 and we hope to add new customers who will cherish Sharonfruit’s unique flavour.”

The fruit has exceptionally high brix levels - above 20 per cent - and is rich in fibre, carotene, which translates into high levels of vitamin A, antioxidants, calcium and magnesium.

The product is grown along Israel’s coastline, from the western Galilee through Zichron Yaakov, Binyamina, Givat Ada, the Sharon area, Shfelat Yehuda and up to Ashkelon and its outskirts.

Agrexco exports Sharonfruit to Europe, South-East Asia, North America and Africa.
