Seed breeder Nunhems’ Intense™ tomato has been nominated for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award 2008.
The product, which is one of 10 to make the Fruit Logistica list, is a full-flesh, high-density tomato, which retains its juice. The high density of Intense makes it a convenient tomato for slicing, dicing and any kind of cutting, without loss of shape or juice. As a result, the fruit keeps a fresh-looking appearance long after cutting.
“These characteristics, together with the deep red colour, make Intense the best available tomato for fresh salads, pizza toppings, wraps, sandwiches or as a cooking tomato,” said the company in a statement.
Tomatoes are already one of Nunhems’ most important lines. “Our expert approach is recognised by Unilever, with whom we co-develop processing tomato varieties on taste, nutrition and health,” said Nunhems.
Besides these traits, Nunhems also focuses its breeding work on yield and labour-saving characteristics. “Intense is our first real innovation for the fresh market and foodservice, sector, and it creates a breakthrough in the market for fresh tomatoes,” said the company.
Nunhems’ portfolio includes leading varieties and brands in leek, onion, carrot, melon, cucumber, tomato, watermelon, lettuce, pepper and chicory crops.
