Spitalfields Market Tenants’ Association chairman Chris Hutchinson affirmed his vision for the market’s expansion at BIFGA’s 20th annual technical day at Lamberhust, Kent, last week.

Expansion is vital because the market “is bursting at the seams”, partly due to its 100 per cent occupancy; something that few other markets have achieved, he claimed.

Hutchinson is pinning his hopes on land becoming available on adjacent Hackney Marshes, after the Olympics in 2012. The Hackney Council-owned land will be concreted over for the games, and Hutchinson said the market would need only 10-12 per cent of the area to fulfil its requirements. If made available, the land would also provide the opportunity for London’s meat and fish markets to be relocated to the site, making life easier and less expensive for companies whose vehicles load up with produce and deliver into London’s retail and restaurant trades.
