Hurricane Isabel could pose a threat to Caribbean banana plantations

Major tropical storms are sweeping across the Atlantic and heading for the Caribbean islands, which could threaten banana plantations according to reports.

Hurricane Isabel follows hot on the heels of Hurricane Fabian. It was expected to pass the north eastern Caribbean islands but could now be heading in their direction. Meteorologist Eric Blake of the National Hurricane Centre said: "It could certainly be a threat, right now it's pretty far away but with our average error being 300 miles, there could be problems."

Isabel has had maximum sustained wind of 135mph making it a category four storm the second most powerful on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale.
