The NFU’s chief horticultural advisor Philip Hudson has been promoted to head of food and farming.

Hudson, who has been with the union for 21 years, replaces Kevin Pearce, who in turn has been moved up to director of regions.

Terry Abbott has been appointed as the new director of membership and business services. Tom Hind, head of economics and international affairs, will become the NFU’s new director of corporate affairs with the departure of Terry Jones, who is leaving the organisation after nine years to join the Food and Drink Federation as its director of communications.

Hudson told freshinfo he was “extremely privileged” to have been promoted to the “beating heart” of the organisation.

He said he was proud to have worked on various issues including the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme, for which NFU lobbying was “instrumental” in extending the quota. His successor is expected to be announced before the end of February.

The former head of business services has extended his responsibilities to cover both the business services and membership departments.

His work on the Fruit and Vegetable Task Force will now be the responsibility of his successor.

NFU director general Kevin Roberts said: “I think these appointments show the depth of talent and experience within the NFU and I look forward to working with all four individuals in their very important roles.”
