BhS boss Philip Green is said to be considering a bid to acquire Harrods from Mohamed Al Fayed.

Having held initial discussions last year, in which Al Fayed apparently demanded a hefty £2 billion for his Knightsbridge store, Green is believed to be ready to negotiate at a knock-down price.

Al Fayed, who continues to be refused a British passport, recently upped sticks to become a tax exile in Geneva and Green has spotted the opportunity to talk shop once more.

His initial offer was described as 'derisory' by Al Fayed's spokesman, who has also denied Harrods is up for sale. Green supposedly feels the time is right for a more realistic figure to be put on the table.

A move for Harrods would mean the shelving of any plans Green may harbour to buy Safeway, leaving the way clear for the four rival bidders to fight it out amongst themselves, depending on the decision of the Competition Commission inquiry.
