Exporter Agrexco has reported a promising green almond season as the Israeli company looks for a strong performance from the short supply window.

Green almonds have a very short season beginning at the end of April and continuing until the end of June, or before if the weather gets too hot to continue production.

The green almond can be eaten "as is" or used as an ingredient in various dishes.

According to Tidhar Jackson, product manager for Agrexco, this season will mark an impressive 25 per cent increase in exports - some 100 tonnes versus last year's 80t, destined to reach the UK and France.

“This increase is intended to satisfy the growing demand for the green almond before it dries and turns into the common almond we are all familiar with," he said.

Carmel green almonds will enter the market a fortnight before those of its competitors. They are mainly grown in the Emek Izrael (Jezreel Valley) and the Lower Galilee.
