Pomegranates the size of Galia melons will hit UK supermarket shelves this weekend.

The fruits are grown in Israel and go on sale at Tesco stores from tomorrow (Saturday), priced at £1.99 each.

Growth in sales of standard-sized versions of the ‘superfood’ is now outstripping that of blueberries, Tesco was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

TNS data reveals that pomegranate sales rose 119 per cent over the past year. The new super-sized version weighs around 650g, compared to the usual 350g.

Tesco pomegranate buyer Paul Cunningham said the melon-sized pomegranates had a “wow factor”.

“Demand for pomegranates is soaring so fast that we thought we’d try and track down something really special to impress shoppers - this is what we came up with,” he said.
