UK garlic producers The Really Garlicky Company were celebrating after finishing as runners-up in the recent BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards 2005.
Glen and Gilli Allingham launched the business in 2001 following three years of trials growing garlic on their farm in the Highlands of Scotland.
The couple were nominated for the title of Farmer of the Year, Glen said: “We feel extremely humbled by the fact that some of our customers voted for us. The whole event was overwhelming, mixing with the movers and shakers of our industry.”
The Really Garlicky Company pioneered the growing of garlic in Scotland and are now the largest garlic growers in the UK. Located at the foot of the Cawdor Hills, the strain, closely related to the juicy and flavoursome wild garlic variety, has larger, easy to peel cloves with no bitter aftertaste. The company supplies around 200 outlets throughout the UK.
