Fyffes reviews chief exec position

Fyffes has cited a changing corporate environment in its decision not to appoint a chief executive to replace Jimmy Tolan, but told shareholders it was reviewing this move.

"We're not making any guarantees on what might happen but we are keeping it under review," said chairman David McCann at the company's AGM.

Fyffes currently shares the role between McCann and senior executives. Chief executives becoming chairman is frowned upon in conventional corporate governance.

The company remains on course to deliver its full-year earnings target which buoyed the stock markets by 10 per cent but stocks remain considerably down on this time last year, reports the Irish Independent.

McCann showed some discontent at the company’s direction as it struggles in the stock market following its demerger.

He said the demerger was "not something we're altogether happy with", referring to the split with fruit and vegetable company Total Produce and Blackrock Land in 2006, but said it had to deal with its current situation.
