Fyffes directors were paid €3.6 million last year, according to the company's annual report.

The payout was 23 per cent higher than 2003, with the five top executives sharing the majority of the extra cash.

Group chairman Carl McCann was paid a total of €831,000, comprising a basic salary of €443,000, bonuses of €190,000 and other payments of €198,000. In 2003, he was paid a total of €686,000. Chief executive David McCann was also paid €831,000.

Neil McCann, who retired as executive chairman in 2003, but is still a director, was paid €271,000.

Frank Gernon, Fyffes finance chief, was given a €98,000 pay rise to €571,000, while corporate development director Jimmy Tolan’s pay-packet increased by €93,000 to €546,000.

Former Aer Lingus boss Willie Walsh, who was appointed to the board last year, picked up €38,000 in fees. In 2004, Fyffes profits rose above €100 million for the first time, a 35 per cent increase on turnover 11.5 per cent ahead at €2.14 billion.
