Freshgro takes to the classroom

Nottinghamshire-based carrot co-operative Freshgro will feature in a new educational resource as part of the Quality Improvement Agency’s (QIA) National Teaching and Learning Change Programme.

Set to launch in June this year, the video features Freshgro’s Nottinghamshire headquarters and looks behind the scenes at its innovative crop growing technology, which the company has employed to revive the popularity of Chantenay carrots. As a resource in further education, the video uncovers how IT forms an integral part of businesses today and makes them more efficient.

The video provides an active resource for teachers, tutors and trainers to use, either in the classroom with learners or in continuing professional development sessions with other teachers.

Martin Evans of Freshgro said: “I think the video will be an eye-opener for young people who may not know today’s farming methods are in the 21st century. It might even encourage a few to consider careers in farming which they may not have considered before, which is good for them and great for those of us who want see the heritage of British farming continue.”

Filmed over two days, the video focuses on the pioneering technology which enables Freshgro to harvest Chantenay carrots, a variety which fell out of favour with growers in the 1970s due to its demanding growing conditions, and looks at the company’s bespoke weather and soil forecasting data technology. It also reveals how sophisticated technology works, alongside a human workforce, to process crops before quality produce reaches consumers.
