Freshgro sends carrots home

Nottinghamshire-based carrot co-operative Freshgro has turned its attention to markets outside the UK and extended sales of Chantenay carrots to Europe.

Freshgro is supplying Chantenay to retailers in Ireland, Holland, Belgium and Germany, but its recent agreement to supply the carrot to France, where the carrot variety was originally cultivated, marks a significant breakthrough for the company.

Aimed at the younger generation, French hypermarket chain Auchan is selling Chantenay under the children’s premium brand name Rik & Rok.

“It is a great achievement for us. To sell our Chantenay in France is a bit like taking coals to Newcastle,” said Martin Evans of Freshgro. “As Chantenay is a premium variety of carrot there is some level of education to be done, but, due to strong signals that Europeans are trading up from basic vegetable varieties to higher end products, we are hopeful that they will be converted to Chantenay.”
