Michael Owen favours raspberries

Three Newcastle United footballers have revealed their favourite fruits ahead of the World Cancer Research Fund’s (WCRF) Fruity Friday event on May 25.

England striker Michael Owen joined Steve Harper and Peter Ramage in naming their favourite fruit for the annual event, which heightens awareness of the importance of fruit in a healthy diet and raises money for cancer research.

Owen is clearly a man who likes his berries. The injured Newcastle and England star, pictured, has named his favourite fruit as the raspberry, meaning the former Real Madrid striker is getting plenty of polyphenol antioxidants, chemicals linked to promoting a healthy heart. Shame about all the other parts of his injury-ravaged body.

Newcastle goalkeeper Harper has slightly more exotic tastes, plumping for the kiwifruit as his number one healthy snack. The Geordie stopper therefore has no worries over his vitamin C intake, with just one of the fruits providing more than the full recommended daily intake.

Meanwhile, Ramage is a more traditional fruit eater, torn between apples and oranges as his favourite. This is good news for the versatile defender’s digestive system, as a medium-size apple contains 20 per cent of an adult’s recommended daily fibre intake. And oranges are high in vitamin C, which has been linked to cancer prevention, healthy blood circulation and wound healing.

Lucie Galice, general manager of WCRF, said: “Everyone knows that Geordies are mad about their football and kids really look up to the players. Hopefully, young Magpies will want to emulate their heroes by eating more fruit.”
