Market organisers in Winchester enjoyed a slice of farm-fresh cake this week as they joined officials from the National Association of Farmers' Markets to celebrate five years of growth.

From the first farmers' stalls in 1997 to the current tally of around 450, markets have enjoyed a surge in popularity nationwide.

And NFU's recent business survey found that over seventy per cent consider business to be 'thriving' enjoying a combined annual turnover of £166.3 million.

NAFM co-ordinator, James Pavitt said: 'The industry has gone from strength to strength and we are extremely happy to be celebrating five years of growth.

'But it must be remembered that it is still fragile and needs support and promotion if it is to continue to grow.' Farmers' markets have seen many developments over the past few years, including the setting up NAFM to support and promote them. NAFM has now introduced a system of certification to promote the markets as exclusive venues for local farmers and growers to sell their produce.
