First signs price war could mushroom

Mushrooms look like they could be the next product on promotion in the supermarkets.

Supermarkets are always looking for the next product to put on promotion, and mushrooms look like they might be that product.

Asda has dropped the price of a 750g pack of value mushrooms to 18p, an 11p reduction on last week. Aldi has also dropped to the same price, and Morrisons has been lowering the price in recent weeks to its current £1.29, Market Intelligence Services figures show.

The prices represent a significant drop on the usual figure of £1.79 for 750g, and some insiders have claimed that may tempt consumers to make an unnecessary switch up to larger pack sizes, therefore encouraging more wastage.

“There’s a major price war on mushrooms in the value-pack cat- egory,” says one source. “They are pretty much selling at cost. It’s mad- ness, although supermarkets are funding the cost of the promotion.”

Elsewhere, with the first signs of spring starting to make an appearance, supermarkets are promoting hard on strawberries.

Tesco, Asda and Morrisons all currently have 227g packs of the popular fruit on promotion at £1, while Tesco, Sainsbury’s and The Co-operative also have 400g packs for either £1.99 or £2.

Raspberries are similarly com- petitively priced. Tesco has knocked 50p off a 150g pack this week to take them to £1.99, a penny cheaper than Asda, while Sainsbury’s has them for £2.50.

At the premium retailers, M&S is selling 150g of raspberries at £3.49, while Waitrose is £2.87.
