FDA to speak out

Dr Nega Beru, director of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Food Safety, has accepted an invitation to speak in Mexico at the International Tomato Congress, which will run from July 23-25.

Beru will focus on the recent outbreak of salmonella on tomatoes in the US, the impact it has had on growers in the US and Mexico, the FDA’s role in the situation and what has been learnt from the events.

The FDA associated the recent outbreak of salmonella illnesses in the US with consumption of fresh tomatoes, and the organisation’s recommendation to consumers to avoid eating certain kinds of tomatoes has had a devastating effect on the tomato industry. Beru will address the reasons behind the FDA’s actions and the lessons learned from the crisis.

Attendees at the tomato congress are encouraged to bring their questions and comments about the salmonella outbreak and food safety practices for Beru.

In addition to the keynote session, the International Tomato Congress offers tomato growers and marketers three days of conferences on tomato production and marketing practices. A commercial exhibition will also be featured, with more than 100 industry suppliers revealing the latest products and services to help today’s professional tomato-growing operation.
