Farmers are playing their part in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, leaders have claimed.
Defra announced that 14.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide was cut in 2004 by major manufacturers and companies signed up to the Climate Change Agreements.
Tim Bennett, NFU president, welcomed the news that NFU members have made an important contribution to these reductions in British industry.
The 10-year energy efficiency agreements, which provide an 80 percent reduction on the government's climate change levy, have been taken up by NFU members.
All have reached total emissions cut targets and energy efficiency goals, providing not only a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, but also cost savings at a time when energy costs are rising.
