English Village Salads, category supplier to Asda in the UK, is getting ready to start its second year of UK winter tomato production.

EVS made its first significant steps in ensuring the continuation of British year-round tomato production last season when it marketed a standard round tomato and an exclusive variety for its Extra Special range.

Barbara Bray, product manager said: “Last year we managed an industry first and produced the first ever commercially-viable British winter tomato crop - collectively the two products generated sales of around £1.5 million over the winter season.

“Everything we grew last year we sold, despite the price premiums customers still wanted to buy British.”

This year, due to customer demand, EVS has decided to focus its production on the speciality Extra Special line, Sweet Plum.

Neel Shah, Asda’s whole-head salad buyer, said: “We fully support the efforts made by EVS. Whenever possible Asda will support British growers, during the UK summer season - 90 per cent of all our round tomatoes are now British grown.”
