Spar has launched two new stores under a new Welsh moniker, Eurospar, capitalising on former Somerfield outlets.
Conrad Davies has bought two former Somerfield stores and part of the package of stores bought by AF Blakemore & Son Ltd and opened them under a new Spar fascia for Wales - Eurospar.
The Henderson Group in Ulster was the first to adopt the format for some of their larger outlets - 18 Eurospar stores are now open in Northern Ireland. In recent months AF Blakemore & Son have opened two company-owned Eurospar stores in Sheffield and Nottingham.
Conrad Davies is the fifth generation of his family to operate the Welsh convenience store business although father Mike still keeps more than a passing interest in what is happening.
Davies said: “The opening of the Eurospar stores is an exciting opportunity not only for our business but also for he local communities, as I want to help local food and drink businesses to grow as well. I think our relationship with the local communities and locally sourced product gives us a real point of difference from all other supermarkets in the area. While we benefit from the SPAR global brand, we like all other Spar retailers have the flexibility to run our businesses independently and so capitalise on our relationships with our local customers.”
