Freddie celebrates reaching his 5 A DAY target

England's cricket heroes took time away from their preparations for the final test of this epic Ashes series to set the sights of young consumers on a modest 5 A DAY - in pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.

England’s five front-line bowlers - Andrew Flintoff, Ashley Giles, Simon Jones, Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard - joined a government minister to advocate the eating of fruit and vegetables.

They met young people from local cricket clubs to encourage healthy eating. The department of health - ever quick with the outrageous pun - said it hoped for a "fruitful" relationship with the English Cricket Board.

All-rounder "Freddie" Flintoff said: "The England team are keen supporters of the 5 A DAY scheme. Five is a special number in cricket, and all five of our bowlers will be looking to take five wickets in the fifth test against Australia.

"To help us stay fit and healthy we eat lots of portions of fruit and vegetables. The days of cricket teas involving stodgy cakes and biscuits are long gone. We take eating fruit and vegetables very seriously as we need to be on top form for our game, so we ask everyone to get behind the England cricket team and help us take 5 A DAY."

The healthy-eating evidently didn't enable Jones to recover from his ankle injury in time to face the Aussies in the Oval decider. Let's hope his replacement is suitably well-informed.
